THE NEW ERA OF WEIGHT LOSS, AND HOW TO STAY EMPOWERED THROUGH IT

As we edge toward the end of the year, I find myself reflecting on just how much has shifted in the world of health, particularly around weight, metabolism, hormonal changes, and healthy ageing. For the first time in a very long time, we’re finally seeing research that recognizes the complexity of people’s bodies experiences and needs, particularly women’s (aaahhh exhale, finally!). It feels like a moment many have been waiting decades for.

At the same time, we are witnessing one of the biggest transformations in the weight-loss world: the rise of GLP-1 medications such as Ozempic, Wegovy and Mounjaro. The landscape has changed dramatically, and it isn’t slowing down. Predictions suggest that 50–60 percent of the population may eventually use weight-loss medication, and I am already seeing this shift in clinic.

After 20 years working in weight loss and holistic health, I have a few important things to say.

These Medications Can Be a Game-Changer

For people who are obese, who have tried everything, who feel like they are fighting their biology every single day, these medications can offer relief, hope and traction. They can soften shame. They can reduce the internal battle. They can help people finally experience progress that has felt out of reach.

Because for far too long, the narrative around weight has been harsh, punishing and deeply disempowering. People have been told they “just need more discipline” or “aren’t trying hard enough.”
On this, I call absolute BS, and I’ve been saying so for years.

Weight is not just about eating less and moving more. It is influenced by biochemistry, hormones, gut health, blood sugar regulation, emotional patterns, trauma history, stress levels, sleep, and the mental load of daily life. My clinical work and my Food Freedom teachings highlight this over and over: real change is a blend of nutrition, mindset, emotions and lifestyle.

So yes, these drugs can help.

But…

We Must Be Careful With the New Narrative We Create

Here’s the part I want every person to hear:

Just because obesity is classified as a chronic condition does not mean you lose your power.
Medication may support your biology, but your agency still lies in your mindset, your habits and your emotional wellbeing.

If we hand all authority to a drug, we lose the very thing that makes change sustainable.

You are not broken.
You are not a diagnosis.
You are not a “before” picture.

And whether you choose medication or not, you deserve compassion, understanding and support, not judgement.

If You’re Using (or Considering) Weight-Loss Medication, Heres WHAT STILL MATTERS

Here is what I tell my clients:

Do not become a passive passenger in your own health.

The medication can quiet hunger, but it will not heal your relationship with food.
It will not strengthen your bones.
It will not build your muscle.
It will not resolve emotional eating or the part of you that says “it’s too hard” after a stressful day.

This is where the real work still matters.

1. Nourish well even if your appetite drops

Your nutrient needs do not disappear when your hunger does.
A wholefood diet is even more important whilst taking medication. This supports metabolism, energy, mood and healthy ageing. It means that you are getting the biggest bang for your nutrition buck!

2. Lift weights

Muscle is your metabolism.
Muscle is your longevity.
Muscle is your future independence.

Because GLP-1 medications & any weight loss protocols can accelerate muscle loss, strength training becomes essential.

3. Get baseline blood tests and regular monitoring

Know what is happening inside your body.
Track your metabolic markers, nutrient levels, inflammatory markers, thyroid function, iron and more. These reveal base lines and track changes through out your journey.

4. Explore your relationship with food

This is the most profound piece for LASTING CHANGE.
If food has been comfort, calm, distraction, celebration or connection, those emotional ties don’t disappear when appetite reduces.
The behaviour becomes more visible when the hunger signal is gone.

As I teach in Food Freedom, the emotions underneath the eating must be addressed, or they simply return or become LOUDER! When you can’t eat to soothe yourself you are left with the feeling alone and this without tools and support can dis-arming.

5. Get support

No one should navigate significant physiological or emotional changes alone.
Sustainable results require support, structure, clarity and accountability.
This is where 1:1 consultations, Metabolic Balance, and Food Freedom work deeply complement any pathway, medication or not.

Let’s Be Clear: Thin Does Not Equal Healthy

This outdated belief needs to retire permanently.

A smaller body does not guarantee a healthier mind, nervous system, digestive system, or relationship with self.
And a larger body does not automatically indicate poor health.

True health is about:

  • emotional resilience

  • balanced hormones

  • stable blood sugar

  • nourishing food

  • restorative sleep

  • a grounded connection to your body

  • the ability to live in alignment with your values

Not a goal weight.

And here is something worth repeating:

There is no shame in choosing medication.
There is no shame in choosing not to take it.

No one should feel judged for their pathway.

We Are Being Offered a Powerful Tool, But the Narrative Still Matters

A medication may adjust appetite, but it cannot rewrite the internal narrative that has kept you stuck.

That work belongs to mindset, emotional understanding and identity shifts.
It’s the heart of Food Freedom: understanding self-sabotage, the start-stop cycle, emotional drivers, and learning how to choose consciously rather than react automatically.

If we don’t shift the societal and internal conversation, the shame simply changes shape:

Shame for “needing” medication
or
Shame for “not using” it.

Neither is acceptable.

We need a compassionate, inclusive, empowering approach where people stay connected to themselves - not overshadowed by a diagnosis or a drug.

So Here’s My Message for You Today

You can want to lose weight and still honour yourself.
